February 22 - March 4

The Venice Carnival began in 1162 to celebrate a victory by the Venetian Republic, with citizens coming together in St. Mark’s Square. The tradition of wearing masks became integral, allowing participants to mask their identities and cross social boundaries, fostering anonymity and mingling among all. Although it was banned in 1797, the Italian government revived the Carnival in 1979 to reinvigorate Venetian culture and promote tourism. Today, the Venice Carnival spans two weeks every February, featuring vibrant costumes, street performances, and numerous parties. The event is a celebration of freedom, creativity, and artistic expression, with its legendary masks serving as a symbol of its rich history.
