Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade – Australia
The Sydney Gay and Lesbian pride parade (or Mardi Gras parade) is held in Sydney, Australia and attended by hundreds of thousands of people from around Australia and the world. It was one of the main draws during the various activities surroundin the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras celebrations. These Mardi Gras festivities are New South Wales’ second-largest annual event in terms of economic impact, generating an annual income of about $30 million (AUD) for the state.
The many thousands of spectators in attendance bring the city to a standstill as they cheer on an insanely large parade of 10,000 fabulous people. Although there are is dancing, playful floats and more, the Mardi Gras Parade still maintains a political mindset, with many marching groups and floats promoting LGBTQI rights issues or themes. A widely celebrated event that has grown with the times, participants in the Mardi Gras Parade now include groups from the uniformed Australian Defence Force personnel, New South Wales State Police, firefighters and other emergency services personnel from the Australian LGBTQI communities.
